02 Nov Shoe Molding or NO Shoe Molding
What is the purpose of shoe molding? The gap between the floor and bottom of baseboard can vary depending on time of year. Attach the shoe molding to the floor so it floats up/down with the floor. Numerous times when the owner decides to change a carpeted floor for a hardwood, tile, or vinyl floor the baseboard might be slightly higher than the new floor. To avoid repainting the entire wall and leave the old baseboard intact the use of a quarter round shoe mold adds a finishing touch and a seamless transition.
In general, shoe mold is for aesthetic purposes only, and a personal preference.
